Millville Man Arrested for OUI

On October 25, 2019, at approximately 7:35pm, the Rehoboth Police Department received two separate 911 calls related to a motor vehicle being operated at a high rate of speed traveling westbound on Winthrop St. (Rte 44) entering Rehoboth.  In addition to the high rate of speed it was reported that the suspect vehicle was passing other vehicles also traveling westbound and came close to hitting several vehicles traveling eastbound head on.  The vehicle was described as a dark colored sports car.  Ptlm. Mark Wetherell and Ptlm. Christopher Pezzuolo responded to the area.  Ptlm. Wetherell located a black Hyundai Tiburon with a Massachusetts registration traveling east on Winthrop St. in the area of Williams St.  Ptlm. Wetherell was then advised that the Hyundai was the suspect vehicle.  At the time that Ptlm. Wetherell first observed the Hyundai it crossed the fog line and was close to leaving the roadway.  Ptlm. Wetherell attempted to stop the vehicle and it continued traveling westbound.  While following the vehicle with his emergency lights on he observed the vehicle cross the center line three times and the fog line two more times.  He also noted that the vehicle would speed up and slow down.  The vehicle came to a stop just east of 295 Winthrop St.

The operator of the vehicle was identified as 36 year old Peter Cardin of Albion St. in Millville, Massachusetts.  Ptlm. Wetherell noticed that Mr. Cardin’s movements were extremely slow and lethargic while attempting to obtain documents he was asked to produce.  Ptlm. Wetherell observed that Mr. Cardin displayed other signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol.  Mr. Cardin was extremely unsteady on his feet and for safety reasons Mr. Cardin was not subject to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.  Mr. Cardin was taken into custody and he was transported to the Rehoboth Police Station where he was booked.

Drug Take Back Day

The Rehoboth Police Department is taking back unwanted prescription drugs October 26 2019.

On Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Rehoboth Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 18th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal the Rehoboth Police Department located at 334 Anwan Street. (We cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last fall Americans turned in nearly 469 tons (more than 937,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 17 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 11.8 million pounds—approximately 5,900 tons—of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

For more information about the event and to locate a take back location near you go to www.DEATakeBack.com.
