On 02/02/16 at approximately 0052 hrs the Rehoboth Police Department received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of #12 County Street, the caller reported a single car had crashed into tree. A short time later Sgt. Ramos arrived on scene and learned from a witness that the white male who was operating the vehicle had fled the scene on foot and was last seen running west on County Street. Rehoboth Officers Brown, Warish and Barros immediately began checking the area for the suspect. Officer Douglas Brown quickly located the male hiding in the woods approximately a half mile from the scene on Reservoir Ave. The male party had a bloodied face and immediately reported he was not driving the car when it crashed and told the Officer “a friend had been driving”. Officer Brown returned to the crash scene with the male who was quickly identified by a witness as the person who made contact with them reporting “I crashed my car” and he was the only person seen exiting the vehicle moments after the crash. The male was identified as Christopher Carey, age 25, of Rehoboth. Carey was checked by medical personnel and later transported to RI Hospital. Carey will be will be summoned to court on various civil and criminal motor vehicle offenses including: driving to endanger, leaving the scene of property damage, marked lanes violation, and misleading a police investigation.
